In Fort Polk, LA, Mahaffey Fabric Structures has been working actively since the late 1990's. Fort Polk is home of the Joint Readiness Training Center serving the Special Forces, Rangers, and Airborne. It is often the last stop for intense interactive training exercises for soldiers departing for duty overseas. Fabric-clad structures have also been used to house soldiers in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Germany, and Bulgaria.
Military applications typically use Forward Operating Bases (FOBs), each equipped to feed and house approximately 1,600 soldiers. A typical FOB includes 8 temporary barracks with cots to accommodate 200 people each. Each temporary barracks building is equipped with a raised wood sub-floor, HVAC, lighting, power outlets, fire extinguishers, and battery operated exit signs. A dining facility (DFAC) is also set on site with cafeteria style seating for 500 - 800 people. A mobile kitchen is located adjacent to the DFAC for hot meal service at breakfast and dinner. Box lunches are often provided each morning as troops depart for training. In most cases, we also install temporary warehouses to store incoming goods. Several times each year we establish temporary housing sites for 5,000 or more people, so our crews are tested and trained regularly.
